Working in Brighton

Many students coming to Brighton may be interested in one of the school's work programmes where you may find a job outside of your study time to practise your English in a professional environment.

The school can help you find a job for basic experience (Work & Study Programme - English in the Workplace) or find you a specific position in your particular field of expertise (Work Experience - Career Development).

1. ISE Work & Study Programme - English in the Workplace

For all full-time students, ISE offers the Work & Study Programme from a selection of different companies in the Brighton area. Jobs typically range from 6 to 30 hours per week.

We can prepare you a CV (Curriculum Vitae) in English, job-search, arrange interviews and provide references for your prospective employer. Should your first job application be unsuccessful, we will continue helping you with subsequent applications until a suitable job is secure.

Work Placement Fee: £350

2. Work Experience - Career Development

Students from the European Union wishing to gain valuable experience in a specific field can apply for ISE's Work Experience programme. We have long established contacts with a selection of different local companies & employers who from time to time offer work experience opportunities. Jobs range from 20 hours per week part time to 40 hours per week full time. Some work experience placements are paid, although the majority are not.

If you would like to work for a particular company please supply us with the details and we will try to get a work experience placement for you. Please note most banks will NOT accept work placements as a matter of policy.

Work Placement Fee: £350

Managing your School & Work Timetable

Work placements can be combined with any combination of study at the school. Some students study 15 hours per week in the mornings & work in the afternoon, others choose to work during the day and study 6 hours per week Business English on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Our flexible classes timetable will allow you to manage you time without losing any pre-paid study periods.

Work Permit & UK VISA Information

It is crucial that students are aware of the law concerning work before applying to work in the UK.

Students from countries in the European Union may work unlimited hours. Students from non-European Union countries may work in the UK subject to VISA permissions. A Residents Permit (previously known as a Student VISA) allows a student to work part-time in the UK, which is a maximum of 20 hours per week. It is illegal for students from non-European Union countries who arrive in the UK with a Visitors VISA to work.

It is strongly recommended that non-Euroupean Union students apply for their UK VISA in their own country before travelling to the UK in order to gain the correct documentation.

Level of English

Students wishing to attend a work experience programme need to have AT LEAST an intermediate level of English. If you are in doubt please contact ISE staff who will email a test to you. Students who arrive with an inadequate level of English will be asked to study full time at the school until a suitable level of English is achieved.
